In retrospect it is surprising that Monty ever got the job of 21st Army Group commander. Two names were in the frame: Alexander and Monty, and Eisenhower had let it be known that he was more than happy to continue with his existing field commander, Alex, having written to Marshall in Washington that he would prefer ‘a single ground force commander. If the British give him to me, I would like to have Alexander.’ Meanwhile Monty noted that three British generals (himself, Alex and Sir Henry Maitland Jumbo Wilson) were up for three senior commands: Supreme Commander Mediterranean, Army Commander Mediterranean, and Army Commander Western Europe.
